• 17 February 1965 (Wed) — recording, EMI Studio Two — Studio Two, 2.00–7.00pm. P: George Martin. E: Norman Smith. 2E: Ken Scott. Recording: The Night Before (takes 1–2). A five-hour afternoon session devoted to Paul’s composition, the third day of the concentrated Help! recording week. Take 2 was deemed ‘best’. John played Hohner Pianet on the track — an instrument “not previously associated with Beatles songs” that was becoming a signature sound of the Help! sessions. Paul’s lead vocal was double-tracked, as was “by now almost obligatory” for the group. The evening session (7.00–11.00pm) moved to George Harrison’s You Like Me Too Much.¹

Part of a batch stereo-mix session covering all 11 songs from the 15–20 February recording week, prepared without the Beatles present (who had departed for the Bahamas on 22 February).¹
• 18 April 1965 (Sun) — second stereo mix attempt, Abbey Road Room 65 — Room 65, 10.00am–12.30pm. P: George Martin. E: Norman Smith. 2E: Phil McDonald. Stereo mixing: The Night Before (remix 2, from take 2). A second stereo remix attempt was made alongside the stereo remix of Help!, but the 23 February remix was the version used: “‘The Night Before’ having already been done to satisfaction on 23 February.”¹

Studio Notes

• Hohner Pianet — John Lennon’s electric piano on Track 2 — The Hohner Pianet C/N was an unusual instrument in early Beatles recording. On The Night Before, John played Pianet as a featured textural element, occupying its own dedicated track (Track 2) on the four-track tape. The same instrument appears on Tell Me What You See (also from the Help! sessions, where Paul played it) and on You’re Going to Lose That Girl (where it sits on Track 3 alongside the guitar solo). On The Night Before, John also played Pianet on the companion recording You Like Me Too Much, recorded the same evening. The Pianet would continue to appear in Beatles sessions through 1966 and into 1967.^1,2
• Double-tracked lead vocal — Paul McCartney — Paul’s lead vocal was double-tracked across Tracks 3 and 4, with the lead vocal on Track 3 and the double-tracked vocal on Track 4 alongside backing vocals and maracas. Double-tracking vocals had become “almost obligatory” by early 1965 and “continued to be a popular effect with the group” throughout the year; several Help! songs feature it. The 17 February 1965 session pre-dates ADT (automatic double-tracking), which Ken Townsend would not develop until mid-1966, so Paul’s double-tracking here is manual — a second vocal performance synchronised to the first by ear.^1,2
• Dual guitar solo on Track 3 — The four-track layout places a dual guitar solo on Track 3, sharing the track with Paul’s lead vocal. This pairing reflects the pre-reduction-mix economy of the February 1965 sessions: with only four tracks available and no 4T-4T reduction mix applied to The Night Before (the first released reduction mix would be Help! in April), instruments had to share tracks. The dual-guitar arrangement places two distinct guitar parts — likely rhythm and lead lines — in the same track space as the vocal, a constraint that would become less necessary once reduction mixing freed up additional overdub space later in 1965.²
• Telefunken four-track — pre-J37 recording — The Night Before was recorded on the Telefunken four-track tape machine, which in February 1965 was still the primary tracking machine at Abbey Road. The Studer J37 four-track was not installed in the Studio Two control room until April 1965. Before that date, the Telefunken machines (the older T9U in Room 1A and the newer M10 in Room 1B) were operated from their respective machine rooms rather than from within the control room itself — a significant practical difference that required the tape operator to work in a separate room from the balance engineer. “Virtually all four-track recording carried out for the remainder of the Beatles’ career would take place on the J-37” once it arrived, but the Help! sessions of February 1965 were among the last Beatles sessions on the older Telefunken machines.²
• Microphone setup — February 1965 week — George Martin’s notes from the adjacent 16 February session (the day before The Night Before) document the standard mic configuration used throughout the Help! recording week: an AKG D19c as Ringo’s drum overhead, an AKG D20 on his bass drum and on Paul’s bass rig, Neumann U47 microphones on John and George’s Vox AC100 SDL amplifier rigs, and a Neumann U48 set to figure-of-eight pattern for John and Paul’s vocals. This configuration would have been carried forward unchanged into the 17 February session.²
• Film-soundtrack session context — The concentrated 15–20 February recording week was undertaken specifically to produce songs for the Beatles’ second feature film. The group and George Martin adopted new recording techniques during these sessions: “One was to rehearse songs with a tape machine running, spooling back to record properly over the rehearsed material. Another was to make finished, releasable recordings in just one or two takes; an impressively economical operation which frequently belied the work involved. The secret here was that the rhythm track would usually be taped first and then they would overdub or ‘drop in’ extra sounds onto the tape at will.” The Night Before, completed in two takes, exemplifies this new efficiency.¹

• 1965 UK mono LP Help! (6 August 1965, Parlophone PMC 1255, side A track 2) — Released mono master mixed at EMI Studio Two on 18 February 1965 (from take 2). P: George Martin. E: Norman Smith. 2E: Ken Scott. The mono mix was part of a batch of five mono remixes prepared on 18 February alongside You Like Me Too Much, and was one of 11 mono mixes carried by the Beatles to the Bahamas on 22 February for film-production approval. “The Night Before” appears as side A, track 2 on the UK LP, directly after the title track Help!.¹
• 1965 UK stereo LP Help! (6 August 1965, Parlophone PCS 3071, side A track 2) — Released stereo master from the 23 February 1965 stereo-mix session (remix 1, from take 2), prepared by Norman Smith and Malcolm Davies without the Beatles present. A second stereo remix was attempted on 18 April 1965 but was not used, “The Night Before having already been done to satisfaction on 23 February.”¹
• 1965 US Capitol LP Help! (13 August 1965, Capitol SMAS 2386, side A track 2) — The US Capitol version of the Help! LP included only the seven film-soundtrack songs on side A (the other tracks being incidental music by George Martin and his Orchestra). The Night Before appears as side A, track 2 on the US edition, same position as the UK LP.¹
• 2009 Stereo Remasters — Help! (9 September 2009, Apple/EMI) — Allan Rouse / Guy Massey / Steve Rooke 24-bit flat transfer of the 1965 stereo master. Mono Masters companion carries the 1965 mono master with no documented remix.
