“Fixing a Hole” is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was written by Paul and credited (Lennon/McCartney).

Fixing a Hole is a song by The Beatles, written by Paul and led on vocal by Paul. Harpsichord-led; recorded outside Abbey Road at Regent Sound. Within the catalogue, its harpsichord thread connects it to Piggies, Because. Paul composed this introspective composition during domestic reflection. The song proved resourceful when Abbey Road became unavailable, prompting the first Beatles EMI-sanctioned session at Regent Sound Studio on 9 February. George Martin later recalled the studio as cramped and boxy, but the recording captured Paul’s meditation on self-improvement and philosophical repair with characteristic restraint.

The session work falls within the band’s Sgt. Pepper’s (1967) period, recorded 9 Feb 1967 at Regent Sound Studio and 21 Feb 1967 at EMI Studios, Abbey Road. George Martin produced; Adrian Ibbetson engineered at Regent Sound, Geoff Emerick at Abbey Road. The unusual session at Regent Sound produced three takes with vocals recorded simultaneously (take 3 was a breakdown; takes 1 and 2 were both complete)—atypical for Pepper sessions, which usually tracked rhythm separately. The harpsichord-and-bass pairing was recorded with Paul’s bass fed through a DI box directly into the console. Later Abbey Road work on 21 February added overdubs and produced mono mixing remixes; the stereo master followed on 7 April.

What’s distinctive

The only Beatles song recorded at Regent Sound Studio, Tottenham Court Road — the sole Sgt. Pepper session held outside Abbey Road. One of 65 songs led primarily by Paul. Three takes at Regent Sound with the vocals going down live alongside the band, atypical for the Pepper sessions, and the bass plugged straight into the desk with no amplifier and no microphone. Harpsichord throughout, connecting it to Piggies and Because. Take count: 3 at Regent Sound; a reduction mix at Abbey Road on 21 February produced take 3, the basis of the released master.1

Frequently asked

Who wrote Fixing a Hole?

“Fixing a Hole” was written by Paul, credited (Lennon/McCartney).

Who sings lead on Fixing a Hole?

The lead vocal on “Fixing a Hole” is by Paul.

Where was Fixing a Hole recorded?

The basic track was recorded at Regent Sound Studio, 164–166 Tottenham Court Road, London, on 9 February 1967 — the only Beatles recording made there and the only Sgt. Pepper track cut outside Abbey Road. Overdubs and mono mixing followed at EMI Studios on 21 February, and the stereo mix on 7 April.1

How many takes did Fixing a Hole require?

Three at Regent Sound. Take 1 was marked master and take 2 final master; take 3 broke down. Take 2 was reduced into take 3 at Abbey Road on 21 February, and that reduction carries the released record.1

Why is the bass sound different on this song?

It was recorded by direct injection — plugged into the desk through Ken Townsend’s transformer box with no amplifier and no microphone, so none of the speaker’s colouring reaches the tape. The group used direct injection through 1967, but usually blended with a miked amplifier rather than on its own.1,2

Do the mono and stereo mixes differ?

Yes, and not only in placement. The mono is two mixes edited together and runs a few seconds longer, ending on a long fade the stereo does not have. The mono was made on 21 February with the band present; the stereo was made alone on 7 April.1,3
